To the editor:

I have known Dr. Tom Hayhurst for several years. He will make a much more responsive representative to Congress from the Third District.

Indiana, and particularly northeast Indiana, have lost tens of thousands of quality jobs in the last few years. Most of us, even we senior citizens, have felt the crunch of the economic recession.

We need to implement fair trade, not free trade and export goods made in northeast Indiana and NOT Indiana jobs. As a retired teacher I know that we need improvements in education. I believe Dr. Hayhurst will be responsive to this and make it a high priority.

I recently took my son who lives in Fort Wayne to the train to visit his sister, my daughter. I had to drive him to Waterloo to catch the Amtrak. This is ridiculous. Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana need not only high speed rail, but improvements to our rail infrastructure which will serve our product distribution and save money in the long run. Yes, it will cost some bucks up front, but we all know what the price of neglect is and our transportation infrastructure HAS been neglected. Dr. Hayhurst is currently working with groups to promote these improvements.

As a senior citizen, my Medicare Supplement has almost tripled in cost over the last six years. I recently got a notice of yet another increase. Dr. Hayhurst will be responsive to our overdue health care reform.

I am not only a voter, but also have written letters to congressmen and senators on issues of concern to me and others. Unfortunately, the replies I get from our current representative often thank me for my letter then proceed to tell me why his opinion is right and mine is wrong. This is not the mark of a good public servant in a democracy. All you have to do is “follow the money.”

Dr. Hayhurst, like myself, has served our country in the military. I know he will be especially responsive to the needs of our veterans, and also well informed and responsive to decisions regarding our current military involvement.

Dr. Hayhurst is and will be a citizen legislator, not a professional politician who is beholden to lobbyists and special interests. We need someone with a vision for the big picture and the future, not just the short term or “tunnel” vision.
