ANGOLA — The Magic Squares Dance Club will begin spinning its spell again at the Breeden YMCA, 500 E. Harcourt Road.
Instructed by Howard Cole and Sonja Miller, the club meets on the second and fourth Fridays of every month at 7:30 p.m. for early rounds. Square dancing and round dancing alternate from 8 to 10 p.m.
Western square dancing lessons start today at 7 p.m. at Carlin Park Elementary School, 800 N. Williams St., Angola. The first night of classes is free.
Club members hark from Howe, Hudson, Hamilton, Pleasant Lake, Ashley, LaGrange, Wolcottville and Kendallville as well as from Burlington, Coldwater and Marshall, Mich.
Miller and her husband, Al, helped organize the Western square dance club in 1989 with Chuck and Della Peel. It was called Magic Squares because Chuck, the caller, did magic tricks at some of the dances. He died of a heart attack while calling at a dance in Florida in March of 1998.
Initially, the club held dances on the second floor of the Masonic Lodge on Public Square in Angola. Dick Duckham became the caller in 2000 and occasionally there are guest cuers and callers.
The club has previously held dances at churches and studios.
Dancers have enjoyed friendships and health benefits from their hobby, they say. It is a cardiovascular exercise that strengthens weight-bearing bones. It is even proven to increase resistance to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Information about the Magic Squares is available by calling Wil and Pat Iler at 665-6401.
