Talent shines tonight for United Way PDF Print E-mail

AUBURN — After more than a decade away from music, a local woman is pursuing her passion, while taking care of three kids and working two part-time jobs along the way.
Eileen (Harding) Myers of Auburn will sing an original song written by Auburn native Tom Michael tonight at the United Way of DeKalb County’s “Maybe We Could Change Things” concert at the DeKalb Outdoor Theater
For her debut performance in Auburn, Myers will sing “Girl in Love,” which she describes as country-pop.
“I asked Tom to write the song,” Myers said. “I gave him some of my ideas, and he went with it.”
Michael and Myers were in show choir together at DeKalb High School in the mid- to late-1980s, when teacher Shelley Johnson first started directing.
Michael was the show choir’s bass player and later went to Western Michigan University, where he played for Gold Company, the school’s show choir.
Myers said pursuing a music career is one of the best things she’s ever done. She’s already recorded an album under an independent label, and she’s hoping someone will hear “Girl in Love” and offer her a chance at recording a single.
Myers said she was thrilled when the Johnsons approached her about performing in the concert.
“They’ve really done an amazing job of raising us,” Myers said of the Johnsons’ commitment to their students. “It’s cool to hook back up with them.”
Now, Myers is looking to the Johnsons to help her son, Nathan, a DeKalb High School freshman who plays saxophone for the show choir.

The Johnsons are bringing many of their past students back to Auburn for tonight’s concert, as well as featuring talented people from all over DeKalb County.
The free concert starts at 7:30 tonight at the DeKalb Outdoor Theater. If it rains, the show will be moved to First Christian Church, 910 N. Indiana Ave.
