Because Bixler Lake has a public beach it is subject to weekly water testing and held to a rigorous standard. Generally Bixler lake tests at very high water quality levels. Occasionally a period of very hot weather or a heavy rainfall can cause test levels to briefly spike. This is true of all natural lakes. For this reason, at times the beach may be closed, even though nearby lakes which are not regularly tested are still in use. Usually the closure is lifted after 24 hours, when second confirmation test results are received.
In the event the City closes the beach, the KPC Sprint Triathlon will follow the Alternative Race Plan:
The race will be conducted as a dualthlon. For the portion that would be the swim, the racers will have a short run along the first portion of the bike route for .75 miles, turn around in the east-side parking area, and run back. The racers will transition to the bike race, and proceed as normal.
The Team Swimmers will swim in the YMCA competitive pool.
After check-in, but prior to the start of the race the Team Swimmers will be transported to the YMCA, which is located on Garden Street, just west of East Noble High School, on the east side of Bixler Lake. The Team Swimmers will start at 8 a.m. The start time will be coordinated with the Race Timer. As each Swimmer finishes, the Swimmer Number will be relayed to the transition area and called out to start the Biker. The Biker will enter the transition area, crossing the time matt, and the race will proceed as normal. We will transport the swimmers back to the race area after their swim.
