Welcome to the KPC Newspaper In Education Sprint Triathlon, cosponsored with the Kendallville Kiwanis, the City of Kendallville and Cole Center YMCA.
The KPC sprint-distance triathlon is set for Saturday, July 16 2011, with race-time at 7:30 a.m.
This competitive but shorter sprint-distance race is great for both veteran and novice athletes. The race is staged at shady, beautiful Bixler Lake Park in Kendallville, Indiana, just north of Fort Wayne. The 500 meter lake swim is followed by a just-under 13 mile bike race, and closing with a 5-K cross-country style run. The run includes a stretch in and around the authentic windmills of the Mid-America Windmill Museum before a shady and spectator-friendly finish in the park. Two and three person teams are permitted.
The swim and run are laid-out in a spectator-friendly fashion, and the park setting, includes children’s play equipment to entertain younger spectators.
Co-sponsors include KPC Media Group Inc., Kendallville Kiwanis, the City of Kendallville and the Cole Family YMCA.
2010 INFORMATION
The registration fee covers all costs, including a one-day USAT membership for those who are not already members of the United States Association of Triathlons. There are no additional on-line service fees. Early registration closes at midnight, July 11 and final registration closes at midnight, July 15. There is no race-day registration.TEAMS
Two and Three Member Team Combos are available. Team members perform separate legs of the race, relay style, exchanging the race timing chip in the transition area. Members of teams must register and pay separately. You will be asked for the name of your team member(s) exactly as they are registered. Teams will receive ONE race packet.
PRIZES
All participants receive T-Shirt, Shoe/sport tote per individual or team, and each finisher receives an ice-cold sport towel.
Men and women will receive awards for overall, masters and division winners (5 year intervals, 1st - 3rd), with prizes including original ceramic pieces by noted northeast Indiana ceramic artists sponsored by SÓZÓ Art Studios, including ceramic bowls, mugs, sculpture and necklaces.
Men and women split winner will be awarded an original hand-crafted race medallion by Timothy's Jewelry.
The first Open Team, first Teacher Team, and masters winners will receive original winning team or split-winner sketches by professional cartoon artists from T.A.G. Artists.
PRICING
Early Registration & Pricing: Early Bird pricing extends through midnight July 11. T-shirts are not guaranteed for registrations after July 11. There is no race-day registration. The race price includes all online registration and USAT fees. USAT members will receive $10.00 discount upon showing their current membership card race day.
RACE TIMING
Professional timing provided by Race Services Company LLC, includes ChronoTrack timing at two splits and the finish line. Splits and final results will be available immediately on touch screen computers during the event and available online after the race.
RACE DAY INFORMATION
YOU MUST HAVE A PHOTO ID TO REGISTER. This is required by USAT. You must show your USAT membership card to receive USAT insurance refund.
Registration opens at 5:30. We expect the swim to start in 4 waves, divided sex/age. Water temperature will be posted by 6:30 for those considering wet-suits. Bike racks are first come - first serve. The race timeline is posted below.
Funds raised by the race will support the KPC Newspaper In Education (NIE) program in the northeast Indiana counties of DeKalb, LaGrange, Noble and Steuben. Learn more about NIE.
A KPC Sprint Triathlon pre-race clinic scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, July 11 at the Cole Family YMCA will offer key tips and help acquaint first-time racers with the transition process and race preparation. The clinic is hosted by all-American triathlete Diana Schowe of Three Rivers Running Company, a race sponsor. Schowe will include key tips on gear, a race preparation check-list, and tips on getting in and out of the transition area "quickly but calmly." Key bike racing and safety rules also will be reviewed along with a question and answer session.
Schowe, who has competed in over 50 triathlons, says that she "used to be competitive, but now I'm in it just for fun," and enjoys sharing her knowledge and experience. For more information contact Schowe at diana@3riversrunning.com.
The Cole Family YMCA is located on Garden Street in Kendallville, just west of East Noble High School.
The KPC Sprint Triathlon is co-sponsored by the City of Kendallville, Cole YMCA and Kiwanis. It will be staged at Bixler Park, including a 500 meter lake swim, 12.75 mile bike ride and 5K run with a stretch through the Mid-America Windmill Museum. The AMTA Indiana Sport Massage Team will provide athletes with a pre or post-event massage for $20 on race day. $5 from each massage fee will be donated to Newspaper in Education.
