College Softball Trine selected region’s coaching staff of 2019
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Trine University softball coaching staff was recently named the Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
The Thunder coaching staff of head coach Donnie Danklefsen, assistant coach Brittney Harvey and pitching coach Dennis Smith led the team to a 37-8 record, a semifinal appearance in the NCAA Division III National Championship and a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season title.
The Trine coaches received region staff of the year honors for the third time in four years. Five of the eight teams in the NCAA Division III National Championships had region coaching staffs of the year, including national champion Texas Lutheran, who was picked the West Region’s Coaching Staff of the Year.
The eight region coaching staffs of the year will be considered for the NFCA’s NCAA Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year, which will be announced on Monday.
Wrestling Fremont show moved
FREMONT — Due to forecasted thunderstorms, a professional wrestling event Saturday has been moved to the Fremont Middle School gymnasium. The show starts at 6 p.m.
The admission is free, and food and drinks will be provided.
Wrestlers from the Michigan Wrestling Organization will be featured in several different types of matches.
High Schools Fremont collecting items for tent sale
FREMONT — The Fremont High School athletic department is taking donations for items to be sold at its 11th annual tent sale July 11-13.
Anything that would be seen at a typical garage sale is welcomed. Fremont athletic director Roger Probst said clothes are not being accepted.
All proceeds from the sale go directly to help fund all FHS athletic programs.

Auto Racing Feature race winners crowned at AMS
FREMONT — The feature race winners at Angola Motorsport Speedway last Saturday night were Tony Dager in the late models, Matt Dimit in the modifieds, Rick Rinehart in the street stocks, Daniel Foulk in the mini-stocks, Jeff Barney Jr. in the front wheel drives and Cole Rhoton in the traveling Midwest Asphalt Champ Kart Series.
Racing returns to AMS high banks this coming Saturday, starting at 7 p.m. Track officials encourage fans to bring their bicycles to AMS. Fans can ride their bikes around the track during the intermission. This is part of track flagman Scott Blackburn’s efforts in the Great Cycle Challenge to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund.
Blackburn is pedaling 300 miles in June and has a goal to raise $1,500 for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Any donation will get you a ticket to bike around Angola Motorsport Speedway. You can also put money in helmets that will be passed around the grandstands during intermission to help the cause.
