GARRETT — The 27th annual Garrett Heritage Days celebration will take place Wednesday and Thursday.
Highlights of the festivities:
Wednesday, July 3 Music in the park
The Hubie Ashcraft Band will be performing songs from their upcoming release at this year’s Garrett Heritage Days Festival on Wednesday, July 3, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Hubie and his band have one full-length album of original music that will be available at the show along with T-shirts, hats, and more. The album was recorded at Sweetwater Sound in Fort Wayne. It features guest musicians that have worked and toured with Elton John, Kenny Chesney, and The Eagles.
Hubie and his group have had the good fortune of touring and sharing the stage with many notable Artists including Eric Church, Luke Bryan, Jake Owen, Trace Adkins, Justin Moore, Kelsea Ballerini, Frankie Ballard, Kellie Pickler, Craig Morgan, Gretchen Wilson, Joe Diffie, and Country Music Legends Randy Travis and George Jones.
Travis “The Fiddler” Gow lived in Nashville, Tennessee for several years where he honed his craft playing the honkytonks of Lower Broadway.
Multi-instrumentalist Tim Thurston grew up in Dallas, Texas where he became a mainstay in the Dallas Music Scene joining Lean Rimes Band and performing with legendary Texas musician Hank Thompson.
Drummer Seve Sullivan-Doyle was born and raised in Fort Wayne where he attended the same high school as Ashcraft. They formed a musical bond that has lasted more than 23 years.
Bassist/vocalist Missy Burgess hails from Angola. Her musical talents are undeniable. In addition to full band obligations, she is often seen performing duo shows with Hubie and other area musicians. Missy recently took a position with Garrett Keyser Butler Community Schools as an English/Media specialist.
The Hubie Ashcraft Band traveled to Nashville this past November to perform several sold-out shows at Jason Aldean’s and The Florida Georgia Line House on Lower Broadway.
“It was overwhelming how many friends made the trip to Nashville with us, I can’t thank them enough” Ashcraft said.
The Hubie Ashcraft Band recently signed with Nashville Agency Romeo Touring Inc. Known for their work with Alabama, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ronnie Milsap. They were the 2014 and 2015 Whatzup Entertainment Magazine Country Music Performer of the Year.

The family-friendly concert is scheduled from 7:30-10 p.m. All concerts and entertainment at the festival are free. Spectators may bring chairs and blankets for seating, or bleachers will be available.
Pet and Bicycle Parade
The Pet and Bicycle Parade will be part of Garrett’s Heritage Days 2019 festivities.
Participants will join the festival parade at the corner of Houston and Randolph streets and finish the rest of the parade route. Thomas Funeral Home sponsors the parade.
Children should arrive at the Garrett United Methodist Church parking lot, directly behind Garrett Public Library, no later than 5:30 p.m. to have their entries judged.
Each child will be given a participation prize and qualify for the top three prizes in the appropriate age group. The three categories are age 5 and under, ages 6-9, and age 10 and older.
Prizes in each category will be: first place, $20; second place, $10; and third place, $5. All prizes will be donated by Thomas Funeral Home.
Heritage Days parade
The annual Heritage Days Festival Parade will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. The parade route will be: east from the school on Dennis Street to Randolph Street; north on Randolph to King Street; east on King to Britton Street, then south on Britton to the school parking lot.
Tuesday, July 4 Pancakes, chicken
Garrett Rotary Club will serve a pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. in the Eastside Park pavilion for freewill donations.
The Knights of Columbus Chicken Barbecue will follow in the pavilion from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cruise-in, car show
The 12th annual Cruise-In and Car Show, sponsored by Rollin’ Heritage, starts at 8 a.m. on East Houston Street. It features door prizes, a raffle, and dash plaques to be awarded at 2 p.m.

City swim meet
The annual city swim meet and coin toss will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the city pool in Feick Park, 1300 S. Cowen St.
The event is free and open to ages 1-15. All levels of swimmers are invited to participate. Each swimmer should bring his or her own goggles. Children younger than 10 years old must be accompanied by a parent.
Pie and cookie contest
Bakers should bring pie, cookie and muffin entries for this year’s contest to the Eastside Park pavilion between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Winners will be selected for cookies, pies and muffins. The event is sponsored by the CJ’s Canteena. Winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m., followed by an auction with proceeds to benefit the Garrett Heritage Days entertainment fund.
Thursday will feature a free Chalk Walk competition at Eastside Park, sponsored by the Garrett Museum of Art. The event begins at 9 a.m., with judging at 3 p.m.
Participants will compete in six age groups: preschool, kindergarten through grade 4, grades 5-8, grades 9-12, family and adult. Participants will create artwork in a 4-by-4-foot or 8-by-8-foot space. Washable pastels, sidewalk chalk and white tempura paints may be used. Chalk and paint will be available for purchase.
First- and second-place winners will be selected in each category, and cash awards will be presented for best of show and best use of color. Winners will be announced on stage in Eastside Park at 5:30 p.m.
Registrations will be taken the day of the event.
5K Run/2K Walk
The annual Heritage Days 5K run/2-mile walk will be Thursday at 9 a.m. Each participant completing the race will receive a T-shirt. First-, second- and third-place winners in each category will receive special awards. A $5 entry fee will be donated to the Garrett Heritage Days Festival.

The Garrett Fire Department will sponsor a bucket brigade and water ball challenge at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Eastside Park.
Age groups will be 5-and-under, 6-9 years and 10-13 years.
Rotary Club fireworks display
The Garrett Rotary Club fireworks display will begin at 10 p.m. Thursday at the Garrett High School sports field. Parking will be open at the school and at the soccer field on East Warfield Street.
