The driver of this 2018 GMC Acadia complained of neck pain but refused treatment following a collision about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday south of Garrett, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department. Sarah Elizabeth Staker was reportedly stopped in traffic in the westbound lane due to a vehicle backing into a private driveway on the north side of C.R. 56, just west of C.R. 17. Staker’s vehicle was rear-ended by a 2011 Ford F-350 pick-up truck driven by Jerry Michael Schoenherr, police said. The impact sent her SUV into the woods on the north side of the road. Every airbag in the vehicle was deployed due to in the impact. Staker said she thought she smelled smoke and quickly exited the vehicle. Staker said she had just dropped her children off at school prior to the accident. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Garrett Fire Department and DeKalb EMS. Police said the Staker vehicle was a total loss.
