ANGOLA — A Coldwater, Michigan, man was arrested on a Level 3 felony charge of child molesting in Steuben County.
Police arrested Zachary J. Taylor, 18, on Wednesday in a case that had its origins in August 2018. The case will make its way through Steuben Superior Court. An initial hearing was held on Thursday.
Taylor allegedly met a 13-year-old girl from Fremont at a party in Coldwater last year, which led to a relationship that carried on for weeks involving various sex acts on less than 30 occasions, court records said.
While at the party, the girl told Taylor that she was 16, to which he replied with relief that she was “legal.” However, at the same party, Taylor told the girl’s brother that he was 16.
After a confrontation with the girl’s mother, it was revealed that Taylor was 18.
Taylor allegedly would sneak into the girl’s bedroom when her mother was at work so the two could have sex. After being caught in the girl’s room once — and Taylor was chased from the premise with a mother wielding a baseball bat — the two would have sex in a car near Kinderhook, Michigan, court documents said. Taylor is also facing charges in Michigan.
During an initial hearing Thursday, a no-contact order was put in place between Taylor and the victim. Taylor is being held in the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $25,005 bail. Court documents do not list an attorney having filed an appearance or being appointed to serve Taylor.
A Level 3 felony carries a prison sentence of between 3-16 years.
