AUBURN — Auburn ranks among the 15 safest cities in Indiana, according to a new list compiled by Protection 1 Security Solutions.

Auburn rates 15th in the state among cities with populations of more than 8.000 people, the study said.

The security company based its rankings on the numbers of reported violent and property crimes in each city through the FBI’s 2014 Uniform Crime Reports, compared to each city’s population.

The study showed Auburn with 0.63 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and 21.1 property crimes per 1,000 residents in 2014.

Auburn is the only city in northeast Indiana ranking among the top 15.

“I would have to credit the citizens of our city,” said Auburn Police Chief Martin D. McCoy. ‘They take a pride in the community that is not found in very many other places. Their pride and dedication to our city has a direct effect on keeping our crime rate low.

“I would also credit the officers of my department for being pro-active in their attempt to prevent crime before it occurs,” McCoy added. “ Of course, there is always room for improvement, and I would love to be No. 1 every year.”

Zionsville ranked as Indiana’s safest city with 0.23 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and 5.8 property crimes per 1,000

Also among the 15 safest cities were: 2. St. John, 3. Greensburg, 4. Carmel, 5. Fishers, 6. Jasper, 7. West Lafayette, 8. Dyer, 9. Westfield, 10. Brownsburg, 11. Munster, 12. Greenfield, 13. Valparaiso and 14. Cedar Lake.
