KENDALLVILLE — A juvenile was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after being shot in the back Saturday evening while hunting west of Kendallville, in what authorities say was an accident.

Conservation Officer Brad Dove said the juvenile was transported to Parkview North Hospital in Fort Wayne following the incident in the 3000 block of North C.R. 750E. His condition was not known.

“Two individuals were hunting, and they were walking single file to another location,” Dove said.

Shortly before 6 p.m., a shotgun was discharged. The youths were walking between 5 and 10 feet apart when the gun went off, Dove said. The injured individual was hit with birdshot.

The two had been hunting pigeons and starlings, Dove said, and charges are not expected to be filed in the incident.
