The Fort Wayne Swim Team has competed in several end-of-summer championship meets, coming away with outstanding results.
First was the Indiana Senior State Long Course Meet in Indianapolis, which is open to all ages, including collegiate. FORT ended up placing seventh in combined team score — a high achievement, considering some of the teams ahead of them included Indiana University, Purdue University, Notre Dame and Carmel.
Representing FORT were: Mya VanderHagen (Carroll High School), Teagen Moon (Carroll High School), Mya DeWitt (Carroll High School), Mallory Jackson (Carroll High School), Laura Wright (Bishop Dwenger High School), Sarah Platt (DeKalb High School), Alyssa Cyrus (Norwell High School), Ashley LeFever (South Adams High School), Marissa Kozel (Carroll High School), Mallory DeWald (Bishop Dwenger), Delanee Grier (Carroll High School), Lauren Crews (Carroll High School), Veronica Lantz (Carroll High School), Ally Kneller (DeKalb High School), Tristan DeWitt (Carroll High School), Jack McCurdy (Carroll High School), Chandler Lipp (Carroll High School), Ryan Huizing (Yale University), Jackson Kent (University of Missouri), Tim Cater (California Polytechnic State University), Noah Woollweever (Oklahoma Christian University), Bryan Lower (Carroll High School) and Bryce Handshoe (Leo High School).
In women’s events, Moon was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly. Mya DeWitt finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke and ninth in the 200 back, and Jackson placed sixth in the 200 back, 11th in the 200-yard individual medley and 15th in the 100 back. Wright was fifth in the 200-year breaststroke and 12th in the 100 breast, and VanderHagen placed 19th in the 100 fly. The 200 medley relay team of Mya DeWitt, Wright, Moon and VanderHagen finished fifth. That same group also finished sixth in the 400 medley relay. Mya DeWitt, Moon, Lefever and VanderHagen placed sixth in the 200 free relay.
In men’s events, Tristan Dewitt finished third in the 200 breast, seventh in the 100 fly and eighth in the 100 back. Huizing placed third in the 100 fly, sixth in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 free. McCurdy finished 10th in 200 breast and 14th in 100 breast, while Lipp finished ninth in the 100 back and Kent placed ninth in the 100 fly. The 200 medley relay team of Woollweever, Tristan DeWitt, Huizing and Kent finished fifth at the meet, and the 400 medley relay team of Tristan DeWitt, McCurdy, Huizing and Lipp finished fourth. The 200 free relay team of Huizing, Kent, Lipp and Tristan DeWitt finished fifth, while the same group placed fourth in the 400 free.
Over the weekend of July 27, the team finished fifth in the state at the Indiana Age Group State Championship for swimmers 14 and younger in Indianapolis.
“This is an awesome accomplishment for our team,” Fort Wayne Swim Team and Carroll High School Head Coach John Gibson said in a news release. “This is the highest team finish and most points ever scored by FORT at this meet.”
FORT had several state champions, including Jonah Barranda in the 10-and-younger boys 50 breast and Trevor Trent in the 10-and-younger boys 50 back. The 10-and-younger 200 medley relay team of Trent, Isaac Bushong, Barranda and Will Greenlee was the state champion, and the 200 free relay team of James Hench, Barranda, Greenlee and Trent also finished first.
Runner-up finishes at the meet included Barranda (50 fly), Mason Crews (11-12 boys 400 free) and Owen Dankert (13-14 boys 1,500 free and 400 free). The 13-14 girls 200 free relay team of Lexi Jankowski, Natalie Marshall, Ellie Parrish and Kenley Garman also finished second.
FORT’s third-place finishers were: Trent (100 back); Jankowski (13-14 girls 50 free); Dankert (800 free); the 11-12 boys 200 medley relay team of Jackson Parrish, Crews, Ryan Kneller and Nate Marshall; the 13-14 girls 200 medley relay team of Garman, Kata Harmon, Chloe Hogue and Jankowski; and the 11-12 boys 200 free relay team of Kneller, Parrish, Crews and Marshall.
