Fire destroys hearse in Waterloo

Fire destroyed this 1989 Cadillac hearse Friday at 1:25 p.m. on U.S. 6, just west of Interstate 69, Waterloo Marshal Jay Oberholtzer said. Police arrived to find it on the north berm, fully engulfed in flames. Driver Andrew Labadie, 38, of Coldwater, Michigan, told police the hearse started running oddly, and people heading in the opposite direction were alerting him that flames were coming from the bottom of the vehicle. He pulled over to the berm, and he and his passenger exited the vehicle. Labadie said he was driving the hearse to his uncle’s funeral in Auburn. The Waterloo Marshal’s Department was assisted by Waterloo Fire Department and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.
