Officer honored for saving life

DeKalb County Sheriff David Cserep II, left, presents his department’s Lifesaving Medal to Sgt. Derek Bergdall in a ceremony Monday at the courthouse in Auburn. Cserep said that on May 5 in rural Corunna, Bergdall used his automatic external defibrillator and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation along with emergency medics and Corunna firefighters for more than an hour until a woman’s pulse was established. She was rushed to Parkview Regional Medical Center and its Heart Institute at Fort Wayne. The woman lived for another two days, allowing her husband and sister to say goodbyes to her, the sheriff said. The medal recognizes “selfless service, unhesitating courage and decisive action,” Cserep said.
