Covered bridge could get new wing walls

DeKalb County Commissioners plan to install new concrete wing walls for the Spencerville Covered Bridge in southeastern DeKalb County. Commissioners voted Monday to spend $45,000 for replacing the wing walls on both ends of the bridge this winter while it is raised for repair of its support timbers. The change will cost only $34,000 more, because $11,000 had been budgeted to repair the existing wing walls. “I think it would be a lot nicer for the bridge and definitely have a lot more longevity,“ said county highway superintendent Ben Parker. “We definitely want to get it right.” The change depends on approval of USI Consultants engineers who designed the project.
